United MileagePlus is now a lot better if you hold an eligible United credit card. As of April 2026, eligible United cardholders can earn more miles on paid United flights, get at least 10% off United award tickets, and have better access to some lower-priced award space. Basic Economy is where the gap gets even more obvious

Basic Economy is a lot harsher now if you do not have an eligible United card. For tickets issued on or after April 2, 2026, a general MileagePlus member without an eligible United card does not earn miles on eligible United Basic Economy fares. A general member with an eligible card earns 3 miles per dollar. Premier members still earn on Basic Economy, but at lower rates than regular economy.

This is probably the most underappreciated part of the change. If you sometimes book the cheapest fare bucket, the card is not just giving you a better multiplier. In some cases, it is the difference between earning something and earning nothing at all.

United Cardholders: Award tickets are cheaper, too
