Learn Which Cardmembers Are Eligible and What to Know Before Updating Your Platinum Card Design
In January 2022, American Express introduced two new card designs for The Platinum Card® from American Express, created in collaboration with celebrated contemporary artists Julie Mehretu and Kehinde Wiley. These limited-edition options were developed as part of the company’s ongoing effort to offer cardmembers the ability to personalize their card design while retaining the same benefits and features of the classic Platinum Card.
If you're an eligible Platinum Card Member, you may be able to request one of these designs through your online account or by contacting American Express directly.
The Art x Platinum series includes two alternative card designs featuring artwork by Julie Mehretu and Kehinde Wiley. Both artists are internationally recognized and share a history with The Studio Museum in Harlem, where they participated in the Artist-in-Residence program. This collaboration was launched during Art Basel Miami Beach in December 2021, further highlighting American Express’s long-standing support of the arts.
In conjunction with the launch, American Express announced a $1 million contribution to The Studio Museum in Harlem to support programs that amplify artists of African descent.
While the card designs are visually distinct, all versions of The Platinum Card® from American Express come with the same benefits, including:

Sebby's take: Despite a hefty annual fee, you get up to $1,574 in credits that help offset this. The card is great for people who benefit from lounge access, travel protections, and access to programs like Fine Hotels & Resorts.

Mehretu and Wiley both took part in The Studio Museum in Harlem's acclaimed Artist-in-Residence program in the early 2000s.
Starting January 20, 2022, Platinum cardholders can now request the new Platinum designs by contacting Amex’s customer support–either through call or chat with no service fee. Alternatively, if you already have an Amex account, you can request them by following these three easy steps.
While the marketing for these new art designs on the Platinum cards seems smart (as it can spark a lot of conversation), the Platinum card’s benefits aren’t really that competitive when it comes to everyday spending.
What’s more, having a physically attractive card isn’t actually relevant these days since everything is pretty much online.
