A Revival of the 2022 Launch

From April 25 to June 5, 2024, Delta Air Lines and American Express re-released a special edition of the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card, made using metal from retired Boeing 747 aircraft. This marked the second time the collector’s item became available, following strong interest during its initial 2022 debut.

A Design That Honors Aviation History

The 2024 version featured a cloud-white glossy finish and was crafted from actual Delta 747 metal—commemorating the iconic aircraft affectionately known as the “Queen of the Skies.” Delta retired the 747 from its fleet in 2017, but the aircraft continues to hold nostalgic value among aviation enthusiasts.

Functionality Meets Collectability

The limited-edition 747 card maintained the same benefits as the standard Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card. However, the physical design became a distinguishing factor. It was available both to new applicants and existing cardmembers via product replacement, though only while supplies lasted.

A Celebration of Legacy and Innovation

Delta and American Express framed the re-release not just as a card launch, but as a tribute to aviation history. The messaging connected form and function—offering both premium travel benefits and a meaningful design story tied to the past.

Part of a Broader Trend in Card Customization

The 747 edition fits into a larger pattern of American Express collaborations with brands to produce limited-edition card designs. These cards appeal to consumers who value both utility and personal expression—particularly within the travel and lifestyle segments.

Still Available: The Standard Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Card

For those who missed the 2024 limited release, the standard Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card remains available. It continues to offer robust travel perks for Delta loyalists, even without the retired aircraft metal.
