NEW American Express Gold Card Review

American Express just revamped the “old” American Express Premier Rewards Gold to the “new” American Express Gold Card. The relaunch includes new perks, increased annual fee, new card design, and of course, metal cards.

As a side note, the Amex PRG and the Gold Card are the same product. Current Amex PRG cardmembers can immediately start enjoying the revamped benefits. If you received a welcome offer for the Amex PRG, you won’t receive one for the Gold Card.

American Express Gold Card

  • Annual fee: $250, not waived the first year

  • Earn 4X points at US supermarkets; up to $25,000 per year in purchases

  • $120 Dining credit at participating partners

  • $100 Airline fee credit

Metal Card

The new Gold Card comes in Gold or a limited edition Rose Gold. Both colors are offered in metal, and the limited edition Rose Gold metal card is available until 01/09/2019.

How to request a metal card

If you currently hold the “old” plastic PRG design, you can call the number on the back of the card or request a card online.

To request a Gold metal card online, log in to your Amex account and navigate to “Account Services” -> “Order a Replacement Card” -> “Metal Card.”

If you want the Rose Gold edition, you’ll need to start a login and start a chat to request the Rose Gold metal card.

Spending Multipliers

The American Express Gold Card has revamped spending multipliers like earning 4X points at US restaurants and US supermarkets. 4X points at US supermarkets is capped at $25,000 per year.

The card no longer earns 2X points at US gas stations.

$120 Dining Credit

To receive the $120 dining credit, you must enroll in the benefit online. Earn up to $10 in statement credits each month when you pay with the Gold Card at participating partners. If you maximize the $10 statement credit each month, you’ll receive an annual savings of $120.

Participating partners:

  • Grubhub

  • Seamless

  • The Cheesecake Factory

  • Ruth's Chris Steak House

  • Participating Shake Shack locations. Excludes Shake Shack locations in ballparks, stadiums, airports and racetracks.

The fine print

Each account is entitled to $120 dining credit per year, so you will not receive any additional credits by having authorized users. Per the card terms, the credit is not valid on gift cards or merchandise purchases.

As a side note, I don’t recommend waiting until the last day of the month to make a purchase. The statement credit is processed when the merchant processes the transaction. For example, if you make a purchase on the last day of the month, but the merchant doesn’t process the transaction until the next day, then the statement credit is applied in the following month.

$100 Airline Fee Credit

Select one qualifying airline per the calendar year to apply the airline incidental fee credits. The airline incidental fee credit can be applied to incidentals like baggage fees and in-flight meals.

Choose your airline and activate the incidental fee by visiting the benefits center in your online account.
