The Discover It card is one of our favorite cards. One of the really great things that make it a keeper card is the Cashback Match. The only downside is that Cashback Match only applies for the first year of the card. If you get a second card, you get the Cashback Match again.
Be aware the Cashback Match only applies to the respective card, and not both of them. For example, in your second year, the first card won’t have Cashback Match, but the second card will.
You can view credit card offers by going to the "Credit Card Offers" tab. Find offers for the respective cards in "Cash Back Credit Cards." You don't have to use our links, but we're grateful when you do. Thank you for supporting AskSebby!
5% Cash Back Categories
Each quarter, Discover rotates cash back categories, which in turn becomes 10% cash back with Cashback Match your first year. Instead of only earning $75, it becomes $150 cash back/quarter. Over the course of 1 year, you’re earning an additional $300 if you max out each quarter.
The great thing about Discover quarters is that it’s typically places I spend money on anyways like Amazon.com, restaurants, wholesale clubs, and grocery stores.
Discover Shopping Portal
The Discover It and Chase Freedom cards are the reasons why I don’t have an Amazon Prime card. I usually end up maxing out the 5% categories whenever Amazon is featured (10% with Cashback Match).
Outside of the 5% categories, Discover It deals often times has really great cash back rewards.
I do most of my shopping online, so going through a cash back portal is a no-brainer. The Discover cash back rates seem higher compared to other portals.
For example, shopping at Apple earns 5% cash back on the Discover portal, which is really 10% with cash back match. The only other portal that comes close is Chase Ink, at 6–8% cash back.
The Fine Print
If you’re trying to get multiple Discover cards, there are a few rules:
- You can only have up to 2 Discover It cards at one time
- You can only have 1 student card at one time
- You can only have 1 new card every membership year — after you receive the cashback match check. Even though the rules say 12 months, it’s really 13 months because you have to wait for the cashback match check.
There’s technically a way to be in your first year every single year, but it doesn’t make sense for most people.
If you’re considering this method, I strongly recommend looking at the Discover It portal to see if it makes sense for you.
The cashback portal typically lets you stack on any other discounts or promotions, so you can get even more value.
