Why I Drink Soylent: To Avoid Spending $15/Day for Lunch in San Francisco

One of the most frequently asked questions I get is, “what is that pink/white bottle in the video background?” The answer: Soylent.

What is Soylent?

Soylent is a meal replacement that contains a complete blend of protein, carbohydrates, lipids, and micronutrients: everything your body needs to thrive.

I discovered Soylent in 2015, and I’ve been an avid Soylent enthusiast ever since.

Reasons why I drink Soylent:

  1. Save money
  2. Save time

The average price of a healthy lunch in San Francisco is $15+ (for a salad!). I got tired of dishing out $15 a day for a healthy lunch and explored the option of drinking Soylent.

Each bottle of Soylent provides 20% of your daily nutritional requirements and 400 kcal. Five bottles per day contain the 2,000 kcal you need to consume per day. I didn’t go that extreme since I like to cook at home, but two bottles for lunch is a great option.

Depending on which flavor you order, the price per Soylent bottle can range from $2.69-$3.09.

Assuming I consumed two bottles of the original flavor for lunch, that’s $5.38 for lunch. For me, spending $5.38 on Soylent vs. McDonald's is the healthier option.

There’s always the option to bring a boxed lunch from home, but I like to be social with my co-workers when they go out and eat lunch. If I whip out my boxed lunch at a restaurant, I risk getting kicked out for bringing outside food. The bottles are much more discreet, and I haven’t had an issue with consuming them inside other establishments.

One of the unexpected perks of drinking Soylent for lunch is not feeling bloated throughout the day. Controlling my caloric intake eliminated my food comas and afternoon lulls.

How does Soylent taste?

Soylent Powder
The powder version is the worst thing I’ve ever tasted. Imagine making bland pancake mix and drinking it.

I’ve tried experimenting with blending flavors into the powder, but I still hated the taste. The powder is also messy because you have to blend it.

Soylent Original Flavor
Much better! The bottled original flavor tastes like leftover milk from a bowl of Cheerios.

Soylent Nectar Flavor
When I first opened the bottle, the smell was repulsive. It reminded me of window cleaner, and for some reason the initial taste was terrible.

I’m not sure why the initial taste was so bad, but afterward, it tastes like leftover milk from a bowl of Fruit Loops.

Soylent Coffeist
Coffiest was made to replace your breakfast and morning coffee. I haven’t tried Coffiest because I already consume a lot of coffee on a daily basis, and I don’t feel the need to increase my caffeine intake.
