Often, whenever you sign-up for a credit card, a few weeks or months later, there might be a higher promotional sign-up bonus than what you were offered. This may give you "buyer's remorse." What can you do in this situation?
As of 2017, American Express does not match sign-up bonuses. Sometimes, they might offer you courtesy credits, but YMMV.
For example, if you sign up for an Amex credit card with a 30,000 point sign-up bonus, and a week later, the offer is increased to 35,000 points, Amex will sometimes offer 1,000-5,000 points as a courtesy.
The parameters for this are unclear, and we're not sure how they determine how many points to issue if any points at all.
My recommendation is to try and apply for American Express cards when they have increased offers. Amex has a once in a lifetime rule, so you don't want to miss out on the higher bonuses.
Bank of America
With Bank of America will sometimes match increased sign-up offers. It's usually based on your relationship with the bank, and who the customer service agent is.
Barclaycard typically will match increased sign-up offers within 30 days of being approved for the credit card.
For example, if you sign up for a credit card on December 1, you have until December 30 to request a match.
Capital One does not offer matches to increased offers.
Chase will usually match public offers within 90 days of being approved for the credit card. One thing to keep in mind is that they will only match public offers and not targeted ones.
You can request a match by sending a secured message or calling the number on the back of your card. I recommend going the secured message route because there's a paper trail.
Be aware that for certain increased sign up bonuses, there are also increased minimum spend requirements to receive the bonus.
Citi has a similar policy as Chase where they'll match public offers within 90 days of being approved for the credit card.
Again, sending a secured message is the recommended route for the paper trail. If you don't get matched the first time, you can always try again.
Wells Fargo does not offer matches to increased offers.
