The US Bank Cash+ card is one of the more interesting cash back cards because you can pick your own 5% earning categories each quarter.
For a limited time, there's a signup bonus of $150 after spending $500 within the first 3 months of account opening (there typically isn't a signup bonus).
Extra 0.5% cash back promo (Expired)
During your first cardmember year, earn an extra 0.5% back on the 5%, 2%, and 1% categories. The card member year is based on when you apply. For example, if you apply in Sept 2017, a card member year is until Sept 2018. This means you can earn 5.5%, 2.5%, and 1.5% cash back for the first year, thereafter, earn the regular rates.
The extra 0.5% cash back offer is only available online for new customers. If you previously or currently have the card, you are not eligible for the offer.
- No annual fee
- 5% cash back every quarter on your choice of 2 categories, up to $2,000 in combined purchases

- 1% cash back on everything else
What we like:
- 2% and 1% cash back is unlimited
- Choose your adventure! Flexibility to select categories.
What we hate:
- Categories have a lot of rules/limitations on stores

On the surface, the US Bank Cash+ sounds like a good card because there's not an annual fee and you earn 5% cash back, but you need to see if the categories fit your lifestyle.
For the 5% categories, pick two to earn 5% back, up to $2,000 in spend per quarter. The maximum you can earn per quarter is $100.
- Ground transportation: Lots of options including Amtrak, Bolt Bus, Clipper, Greyhound, Lyft, Uber
- Car rentals (side note: card comes with secondary CDW)
- Sporting good stores
- Select clothing stores
- Gym and fitness centers
- Select department stores
- Cell phone
- Furniture stores
- Electronic stores
- Fast food restaurants
- Movie theaters
The main issue is that most people will not spend that much money on the specific 5% categories. This comes out to $2,000 per quarter for two categories, meaning you want to spend $300/month per category to maximize cash back.
If you can optimize the above 5% categories, then the U.S. Bank Cash+ card is a good card to have in your wallet.
