Update: Negative Changes to the Chase IHG Rewards Club Select Card Anniversary Free Night

Chase recently sent out letters to all Chase IHG Rewards Club Select Card about new restrictions to the free anniversary night.

From Chase and IHG:

"Anniversary Free Night is valid at IHG® Hotels with a current point redemption level of 40,000 points or less, and must be redeemed, and stay must be completed, within 12 months from date of issue. Visit IHG.com/AnniversaryFreeNight for a list of hotels that do not accept the Anniversary Free Night certificate. "

This is a negative change because the Anniversary Free Night did not have a 40,000 point restriction before.

Who is affected by the change?

This is a system-wide change, so all Chase IHG Rewards Club Select cardholders will be affected. Anyone who received the card in the past 12 months (May 2017 onwards) will not have access to the unrestricted night.

According to several tweets, it seems like Chase is sending mixed messages.

As of writing this post, it's unclear what the official resolution is.

What should you do?

I think it's important to calculate your next moves and not impulsively cancel the card. There are still a few good redemptions out there, especially if you plan on visiting Asia.

For people who have the card for less than 12 months and are impacted by the change, you can tweet at Chase and IHG or call the IHG number on the back of your card and let them know your concerns. If you escalate your concerns to a supervisor, they may give you some points for the inconvenience. Your mileage may vary.

Another option is if you have the Chase IHG Rewards Club Select Card for more than 12 months, then you can downgrade the card to the Classic Chase IHG Rewards Club, which has no annual fee and gives you Gold status.

On the other hand, if you're considering getting the new IHG cards, I recommend waiting to see what the upgrade offer is since it was mentioned in the letter.

There are a handful of questions about the new and old cards that need to be resolved:

  • Will the unrestricted anniversary nights be honored for all cardholders who signed up in the past 12 months?
  • Can you stack the anniversary nights from the IHG Select and the IHG Premier?
  • Will Chase consider the IHG Select and the IHG Premier the same or different products?
  • How much is the upgrade offer worth?
