Everyone makes mistakes at one point, and August was a month of trip booking fails since I was in a rush to book my tickets to visit Texas. Here are some of my mistakes that you can learn from.
1. Wrong Layover
On my most recent trip to Texas, I decided to add some layovers in Dallas to check out the lounges. This turned out to be a huge fail because the Amex Centurion Lounge was closed for renovations on the dates I was visiting.
Furthermore, The Club at DFW was also in a temporary location due to renovations. I should have done more research to avoid these fails.
2. Wrong Airport
Houston has two airports- Houston International Airport (IAH) and Houston Hobby Airport (HOU). I didn't research the airports in advance and ended up booking my tickets to HOU.
This was a fail because IAH is the airport with the Amex Centurion Lounge and Priority Pass lounges. HOU is a significantly smaller airport with no lounges.
3. Didn't Book with the Right Card
I flew American Airlines, and I had a few gift cards to use. This was a terrible mistake to not put a portion of my flight on the Citi Prestige or Chase Sapphire Reserve card since my flight was delayed.
Since I paid for the trip in full with gift cards, I did not have any trip protection for delays. My flight was delayed by more than 3 hours. If I paid a small amount with my Citi Prestige card, I would have been reimbursed up to $500 for reasonable expenses. I did end up eating dinner at the airport, so that would've been covered if use the Citi Prestige.
