We have plenty of posts focusing on how to optimize for points and miles, and one of the most popular destinations from the free card consultation forms is Hong Kong.
How to Fly Cathay Pacific Business/First Class to Hong Kong with Points
Cathay Pacific uses Air Asia Miles, which will be highlighted in this post. To book the flights, you'll need to have a large stockpile of points. The focus of the calculator is to figure out how many points you'll need, and how to obtain them.
How to use the calculator:
- Access the calculator here: http://bit.ly/2HQ2xIM
- "Make a copy of" OR "Download As" to modify
- Edit the YELLOW cells. More instructions below.
The first step is to put an "X" in the Zone you're flying out of based on the distance on the award chart. There is a second tab in the spreadsheet to look at the Award Chart.
See the Asia Miles Awards charts here: https://www.asiamiles.com/en/redeem-awards/flight-awards/flight-award-chart.html
The next step is to put an "X" on the type of ticket you would like to book. Select only one.
- One-way Business Class
- Round-trip Business Class
- One-way First Class
- Round-trip First Class
You'll notice that each fare type will have different points requirement. Round trip tickets have a better redemption rate.
The retail cost of flights is pulled from Google flights based on low and high season. Cents per point (CPP) varies depending on the retail price.
The GREEN box in the middle of the spreadsheet shows how many points you'll need based on the Zone and ticket type. It will also calculate the value of spend and the minimum spend for the cards you'll select in the next section.
The fastest way to accumulate points is through sign-up bonuses. In the Card Options section, you'll find the sign-up bonus value plus minimum spend requirements to get the bonus.
Place an "X" on the cards you want to get based on the points needed from the Trip Planning section.
You can view credit card offers by going to the "Credit Card Offers" tab. Find offers for the respective cards in "Travel Rewards Credit Cards" and "Hotel Credit Cards." You don't have to use our links, but we're grateful when you do. Thank you for supporting AskSebby!
There's also a section to enter points you already have.
As a reminder, American Express Membership Reward points and Citi ThankYou points transfer to Asia Miles at a 1:1 rate.
SPG and Marriott points receive a 5,000 point bonus when you transfer our 20,000 points and 60,000 points, respectively.
