Hilton Gold and Diamond Status Match Challenge, Plus Alternatives to Status Match

Hilton has a wide range of hotel brands in its group ranging from budget-friendly Hampton Inns to luxury brands like Conrad.

If you’re planning on staying at a Hilton property soon, you can enroll in their status match program to earn Gold or Diamond status through March 31, 2020. Once you start the status challenge, you can enjoy the elite perks for 90 days.

Why Hilton Gold or Diamond Status Matters

Having Hilton Gold or Diamond status comes with a bunch of perks, but the ones that stand out to me are:

  • Point multipliers

  • Room upgrades, based on availability

  • Complimentary breakfast at all hotels

  • Executive lounge access

How to Request a Hilton Status Match

  • Hilton Gold status challenge: Complete 4 stays in 90 days to keep Gold until March 31, 2020

  • Hilton Diamond status challenge: Complete 8 stays in 90 days to keep Diamond until March 31, 2020

To request a Hilton status match, you’ll need to have elite status in any competing hotel loyalty program, and proof that you’ve stayed at the competing hotel at least once in the past 12 months.

  1. Have hotel status at any competing hotel loyalty program

  2. Register or have your Hilton Honors account number ready

  3. Complete the online status match form here: https://statusmatch.hiltonhonors.com/

  4. Select the Hotel Loyalty Program you want Hilton to match

  5. List your status with that program

    • Upload proof of status

    • Upload proof of stay within the last 12 months with other Hotel Loyalty Program

How to get Hilton Gold or Diamond Status

A handful of hotel credit cards give you automatic elite status at their respective hotel groups. Important: These can change over time; YMMV.

The following status at competing hotels qualify for the Diamond Challenge:

  1. IHG Platinum (comes w/ Chase IHG Premier)

  2. Marriott Platinum

  3. Hyatt Globalist

The following status at competing hotels qualify for the Gold Challenge:

  1. Marriott Gold (comes w/ Amex SPG Luxury)

  2. Best Western Diamond / Diamond Select


Alternatives to the Hilton Status Match Challenge

If you’re not interested in completing a status match challenge but you want status, there are a few ways to achieve this by getting the right credit cards.

Hilton Status: Play #1 (Gold)

Amex Hilton Ascend

  • Automatic Hilton Gold status just by having the card

  • $95 Annual fee

  •  In Year 1, the card makes sense due to the welcome bonus

  •  After the first year, upgrade/downgrade as needed 

Hilton Status: Play #2 (Gold)

Amex Platinum

  • Automatic Hilton / Marriott Gold status by having the card

  • $550 Annual fee (~$150 effective annual fee)

  •  In Year 1, the card makes sense due to the welcome bonus

  •  After the first year, your mileage may vary

Hilton Status: Play #3 (Diamond)

Amex Hilton Aspire

  • Automatic Diamond status by having the card

  • $450 Annual fee ($250 airline credit + $250 Hilton + anywhere weekend night)

  •  In Year 1, the card makes sense due to the welcome bonus

  •  After the first year, your mileage may vary
