Deals of the Week: New Chase Freedom Deals, Chase Pay Offers, Don’t Upgrade IHG Select Card

Chase Pay: Buy 3 meals, earn $10

Earn a $10 meal credit when you use Chase Pay 3 times this month at restaurants that show the offer in the Chase Pay app.

Chase Freedom or Chase Freedom Unlimited: Use Chase Pay and Samsung Pay to earn 1,500 UR points (Targeted)

Link your Chase Pay to Samsung Pay and tap/pay 3 times to earn an extra 1,500 UR points.

The deal is targeted and available to Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Unlimited cardholders.

  • Offer valid from 3/1/2019-3/31/2019

  • You may receive a Form 1099-MISC for the bonus points

Chase Freedom or Chase Freedom Unlimited: Earn 10x on hotel bookings

Earn 10x UR points on hotel bookings with the Chase Freedom or Chase Freedom Unlimited, on up to a maximum of $2,500 in spend via the Chase UR portal.

The purchases will earn 10x points in total, and not 1x (Freedom) or 1.5x (CFU).

The promo is valid for purchases between March 1 to March 31, 2019 when you pay using cash, and not Ultimate Reward points.

Details:

  • Must use “cash” (pay with the card) NOT points

  • Earn 10x points total (so ~8.5x bonus on top of CFU 1.5x default)

Max benefit = $2,500 spend * 10x = 25,000 UR

The main value of value of UR points is maximized when you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve or Chase Sapphire Preferred for transfer partners.

Value of points:

  • CSR Trifecta (portal) = 25k * 1.5 CPP = $375

  • Transfer partners (ideal) = 25k * 2 CPP = $500

  • Transfer partners (aggressive) = 25k * 3 CPP = $750

Return on spend:

a) $375 value / $2,500 promo spend = 15%

b) $500 value / $2,500 promo spend = 20%

c) $750 value / $2,500 promo spend = 30%

Don’t Upgrade Your Chase IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card

Chase started sending out upgrade offers to Chase IHG Rewards Club cardholders. My advice is that you shouldn’t take the 5,000 point offer. It’s not worth it given that the IHG Premier card has a higher annual fee.

Chase IHG Select (grandfathered) => IHG Premier:

  • 5,000 IHG point upgrade offer

  • Current = $49 annual fee + 40k anniversary certificate

  •  Upgrade = $89 annual fee + 40k anniversary certificate

Paying $40 more EVERY year for 5,000 IHG points? No thanks.

In addition, you’re also giving up:

  • IHG Premier welcome bonus (80k to 120k)

  • 2 keeper card play (one at $49 a year)

Capital One Savor Welcome Offer Decreasing Soon?

As of writing this post, the Capital One Savor card has a $500 welcome offer after $3,000 in spend within the first 3 months of account opening.

  • $500 bonus / $3,000 spend = 16.7% return on spend

The $500 bonus might be decreased to $300 soon.

The Savor might be keeper for some people since it earns 4% back on entertainment. Another benefit of the Savor card is that it has a no annual fee downgrade path to the SavorOne card.

I would only go for the Savor if:

1) You’re over 5/24

2) You can hit min spend

3) You factor in “low hanging fruit” (“$150 for $500”)
