The Citi ThankYou Premier card is comparable to the Chase Sapphire Preferred since it earns points on travel and dining. If you're in the mid or late game and looking for new cards, this might be a good option.
Citi Bank has a rule that states you cannot receive a signup bonus from a card if you received a bonus from Citi within the past 24 months. It's hard to accumulate a lot of ThankYou points due to the signup bonus rule.
You can view credit card offers by going to the "Credit Card Offers" tab. Find offers for the respective cards in "Travel Rewards Credit Cards." You don't have to use our links, but we're grateful when you do. Thank you for supporting AskSebby!

What are Citi ThankYou points worth?
The value of Citi ThankYou points depends on how you plan to redeem them.
- 1 Cents Per Point (CPP) = statement credit
- 1.25 CPP = airfare via Citi Travel Portal
- 2 CPP = transfer partners
Most people will redeem for airfare via the Citi Travel Portal since using transfer partners is more complicated.
CITI PREMIER: VALUE / RETURN ON SPEND
The Citi ThankYou Premier card has a 50,000 point signup bonus after you spend $4,000 within the first three months of account opening. 50,000 points are equivalent to $625 in value when you redeem for travel, which comes out to be 15.6% return on spend (ROS). Get 25% ROS when you use transfer partners.
Signup Bonus: 50k TY points after $4,000 MSR (first 3 months)
- a) 50k TY * 1.25 CPP = $625 in value = 15.6% ROS
- b) 50k TY * 2 CPP = $1,000 in value = 25% ROS
When you factor in spending multipliers with the value of cents per point, you get the following values for return on spend.
3x on travel
- a) 3x * 1.25 CPP = 3.75% ROS
- b) 3x * 2 CPP = 6% ROS
2x on dining/entertainment
- a) 2x * 1.25 CPP = 2.5% ROS
- b) 2x * 2 CPP = 4% ROS
1x on else
- a) 1x * 1.25 CPP = 1.25% ROS
- b) 1x * 2 CPP = 2% ROS
Citi 24 Month Rule
You aren't eligible for a ThankYou point signup bonus if you had the Prestige, Premier, or Preferred card that was opened OR closed* in the past 24 months.
*product changes sometimes affect this as well; usually if your card number changes
If you are considering getting a Citi Prestige card, the optimal strategy is to apply for the Citi ThankYou Premier card first since the Prestige currently does not have a signup bonus. Due to the Citi 24 month rule, if you apply for the Prestige first, you might not receive the signup bonus for the Premier.
Since the Prestige = no bonus (currently)
- Citi ThankYou Premier first = bonus
- Citi Prestige = later
The Citi ThankYou Premier's $95 annual fee is waived the first year, and you can product change it after you've had the card for 12 months. Product change options include the Citi Costco card, Dividend (5%), or Double Cash (2%).
