Citi Rewards+ and Citi Rewards+ Student Credit Card Review

On January 10, 2019, Citi Bank launched the new Citi Rewards+ card. A few days later, the Citi Rewards+ Student card was also released. Aside from the welcome offer, both cards have the same benefits. We’ll review both in this post.

Citi Rewards+

  • Welcome offer: 15,000 Citi ThankYou points after $1,000 in spend within the first 3 months of account opening

  • Spending multipliers:

    • 2x at Supermarkets and Gas Stations for the first $6,000 per year, then 1x points thereafter

    • 1x back on everything else

  • No annual fee

  • 10% points back for the first 100,000 points redeemed per year

Citi Rewards+ Student

  • Welcome offer: 2,500 Citi ThankYou points after $500 in spend within the first 3 months of account opening

  • Spending multipliers:

    • 2x at Supermarkets and Gas Stations for the first $6,000 per year, then 1x points thereafter

    • 1x back on everything else

  • No annual fee

  • 10% points back for the first 100,000 points redeemed per year

  • Must be a college or graduate student

Round Up Rewards

The unique feature of the Citi Rewards+ cards is that ThankYou Points will be rounded up to the nearest 10 on every purchase.

“Round Up to the nearest 10 points on every purchase — with no cap. So your $2 coffee earns 10 points, and a $22 dinner for two earns 30 points.”

10 points minimum, per transaction:

  • 1.1 CPP (cash out) = 10 * 1.1 CPP = $0.11

  • 2 CPP (airline transfer) = 10 * 2 CPP = $0.20

Value of Citi ThankYou Points

At a minimum, Citi ThankYou points earned from the Citi Rewards+ cards are valued at 1.1 cents per point (CPP) since each point earned gets 10% back.

  • Points minimum value = 1.1 cents per point (CPP)

  • Points target value = 2 CPP (transfer partners)

  •  Citi Premier/Prestige required for transfer partners

To get the 2 CPP valuation, you would need a Citi ThankYou Premier or Citi Prestige card to use transfer partners.

Citi Transfer Partners

Citi has a wide range of airline transfer partners. Excluding promos, this is the current list as of 1/14/2019.

Citi transfers 1,000 TY to 1,000 partner points for:

  • Asia Miles (Cathay)

  • Avianca LifeMiles

  • Etihad

  • Eva Air

  • Flying Blue

  • Garuda Indonesia

  • JetPrivilege

  • Malaysia Enrich

  • Qantas

  • Qatar

  • Singapore KrisFlyer

  • Thai Royal Orchid

  • Turkish Airlines

  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

Citi transfers 1,000 TY to 800 partner points for:

  • JetBlue

Eligibility

To qualify for the welcome offer, you must not have received a new cardmember bonus for the following cards or closed any of these cards, in the past 24 months.

  • Citi Rewards+

  • Citi ThankYou Preferred

  • Citi ThankYou Premier/Citi Premier

  • Citi Prestige

If you’re someone waiting for the Citi Prestige, I don’t recommend getting the Citi Rewards+ because the Prestige bonus will likely be more than 15,000 points.

Unless you’re a student with no credit history, I recommend going for the regular Citi Rewards+ card since there’s a higher welcome offer.

The Citi Rewards+ card is a good way to accumulate ThankYou points, and then acquire a Citi ThankYou Premier or Prestige card later to redeem the points for travel.

As a side note, it is possible to product change an existing Citi card to the Citi Rewards+.
