Amex SPG Luxury Credit Card Review

The Amex SPG Luxury card is a great option for a keeper hotel card that gives you Marriott credits, airport lounge access, Gold status, and increased spend multipliers. In this post, we'll look at the long-term value of the card since the signup bonus amount can change.

Amex SPG Luxury card

  • Marriott credit: $300 per card member year

  • Receive 1 Free Night Award every year after your card anniversary (up to 50,000 points)

$300 Marriott Credit

The Amex SPG Luxury card comes with a $300 credit to use towards any Marriott property. There are over 6,000 properties to choose from:

When you deduct the $300 credit from the annual fee, the effective annual fee is $150.

Value of Points

To calculate the value of Marriott points, take the retail cost of your ideal property and divide it by the point cost.

a = $ cost of ideal property

a = $600

b = point cost of ideal property

b = 60,000 Marriott

c = value of points

c = a / b = $600 / 60,000 = 0.01
c = 1 cents per point (CPP)

For example, if the property you want to stay at retails for $600 and costs 60,000 points, the value of a Marriott point is 1 cents per point.

Marriott points can be worth 0.8-1.2 CPP depending on where you redeem them.

Spending Categories: Dining + Airlines

Earn 3X points on dining and airline purchases with the Amex SPG Luxury card. Depending on how you value points, the SPG Luxury card will yield 2.4%-3.6% return on spend.

  • SPG Luxury = 2.4% to 3.6% return on spend

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve = 4.5% to 6% return on spend

    • Chase portal: 3x * 1.5 CPP = 4.5%

    • Transfer partners: 3x * 2 CPP = 6%

When you compare the Amex SPG Luxury to the Chase Sapphire Reserve return on spend, you'll come out on top with the Chase Sapphire Reserve.
