Big Change to the Chase Hyatt Card Signup Bonus

The signup bonus is changing from 2 free nights at any of their hotels to 40,000 Hyatt points. Which offer makes more sense for you?

On June 29, 2017, the Chase Hyatt sign up bonus will go from 2 free nights to 40,000 points. Depending on how you travel, both offers can be great if you know how to use them.

If you’re someone who would stay at a category 1–4 hotel, take the points. If you prefer to get maximum value at a category 6+ hotel, take the free night certificates.

2 free nights

The 2 free nights sign up bonus provides outsized value when you redeem them at Category 6 and above properties.

We’ve created a few videos about the Chase Hyatt card. For a refresher, watch the video below:

Caveats

  • The free nights can only be redeemed for standard rooms and not upgrades
  • If you want to get a room upgrade, you’ll have to pay with points so the points offer might make more sense
  • Certificates expire after 12 months

20,000 points

Points will provide more nights and value if you stay at Category 1–4 hotels. If you stay at Category 5 hotels, either sign up bonus will yield the same result.

Cost per night in points:

  • Category 1: 5,o00
  • Category 2: 8,000
  • Category 3: 12,000
  • Category 4: 15,000
  • Category 5: 20,000

Cash + Points

If you’re willing to pay cash and points, it may make sense to take the points offer, depending on the property.

Room upgrades on paid nights

The points option also makes sense if you’re want to redeem points for room upgrades on paid nights. Certificate nights can only be redeemed for standard rooms.
